The book “From under the American snowdrifts” is the author’s translation, from Slovak to English, of a collection of short stories describing the life and times of early American Slovak Immigrants in United States. It was written by Gustáv Maršall Petrovský in his book “Zpod závejov Amerických” and published in 1908. Petrovsky, despite living in USA for rest of his life never published anything in English. The book is a collection of 10 fictionalized stories dealing with the problems and challenges Slovaks immigrants experienced and endured in the USA at the turn of the twentieth century. Petrovsky edited numerous Slovak newspapers and magazines and used fictionalized real life stories to illustrate the life of Slovaks, particularly immigrants, in the Slovak communities. This was his way of encouraging Slovaks to go back to the old country where they were needed to build a better Slovak society.
